About
Nia Bo is a multidisciplinary artist focused on site-specificity, the more-than-human, and the eco sublime within landscapes that are undergoing transformation and disappearance.
She works in painting, field recording, camera-less alternative photography and moving image.
Her artistic practice involves a phenomenological embodied sensual encounter with the landscape followed by an act of co-creation with nature. By leaving nature to authentically imprint its own physical marks, her process becomes a statement of humility towards nature, serving as a metaphorical expression of commitment to the minimisation of human interference.
Through her direct observations and experiments with natural materials and phenomena, she reflects on the relevance of alchemy in nature, recognising the inherent agency within each material and natural phenomenon. She explores how they intricately shape and define our landscapes, both externally and within ourselves.
The concept of natura naturans, as described by Spinoza, is a reminder of the modest role we humans play in the grand scheme of the universe's ongoing creative process. Deleuze and Guattari's depiction of nature as a "pure plane of immanence" where "unformed elements and materials dance" also highlight nature's intricate agency.
Acknowledging humanity's minuscule proportion in the total biomass at a barely 0.01% and inspired by Karen Barad’s suggestion that “matter feels, converses, suffers, desires, yearns and remembers” , with her work Nia Bo evokes empathy and a sense of magic for the vitality and energy of the unnoticed world that surrounds us.
